Rangers defender Joe Worrall is back in the media again this week to explain his disappointment about not being able to turn out for Nottingham Forest.

It’s the second time over the last couple of months Worrall has expressed a desire to be playing for his parent club as soon as possible.

Obviously it goes with the territory of signing loan players that we can’t expect the full dedication of a permanent signing, but the young defender seems to love talking about Forest above all else.

As quoted by The Daily Record in a recent interview, the 21-year-old said:

There was a spell last year I thought I was playing really well and then not long after that there was the whole thing in the transfer window with Burnley.

That is how quick football changes. You go from turning down bids to going on loan in the summer. But I have not changed at all as a player. If anything I have got better.

If you overcome setbacks it makes you stronger as a person. I am just trying to get as many games under my belt before I go back to Forest in the summer.

I love playing at Forest – it is my home and it is all I have wanted since a kid. So it was a sucker punch to leave, even though it is a loan, but coming to Rangers is unbelievable.

Despite the assertion he is enjoying life at the Gers, you can’t help but feel he is counting down the days until he returns to the English Championship, he almost admits as such.

What’s strange is that Steven Gerrard seems to be actively invested in his development, with the player getting game time ahead of long-term Ibrox prospects like Nikola Katic.

Is it now time to treat Worrall like a back-up option, since we as a club are clearly his?

With the return of Gareth McAuley to fitness, I’m hoping the manager turns to a new partnership between the veteran and Connor Goldson.
