Rangers are now favourites to wrestle away the Scottish Premiership title from Celtic, according to Sky Sports pundit and ex-Hoops striker Charlie Nicholas.

The Gers have made a stunning start to the January transfer window, bringing in quality and experienced players Steven Davis and Jermain Defoe.

Now Nicholas believes that could give us the edge over Celtic in the second half of the season, ending cocky Brendan Rodgers’ recent dominance of major honours.

As quoted by The Daily Star, the Sky Soccer Saturday man said:

Rangers are now title favourites after the first week of the transfer window. I always said Steven Gerrard’s arrival as Rangers boss made me – as a Celtic man – sit up and take notice.

In August, I wasn’t worried, But I was aware of a new Rangers threat. With the loan signings of Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis, that threat is now very real.

Celtic have countered by taking in Oli Burke and Timothy Weah until the summer. But Rangers have done the better deals.

For now, it’s advantage to Rangers.

Obviously there’s a lot of work to be done by Steven Gerrard and his squad to think about lifting trophies in May, but it is interesting to see the perception of the club change rapidly in the wake of the derby win and transfer business.

There’s no doubt we’re on the up under Gerrard and when you consider this time last year we were struggling to bring in quality under the guidance of a caretaker manager, the rise has been remarkable.

Celtic-minded pundits are now running scared and it’s magic!

Roll on the return to action after the winter break.
