Steven Gerrard launched a scathing attack on his under-performing first-team on Saturday after a dismal draw at home to St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership.

Two 0-0 results in a row leave Rangers at risk of dropping out of the title race and struggling to progress in the Scottish Cup, angering supporters who thought this team held so much promise in the wake of December’s victory against Celtic.

Most worryingly of all, the manager does not seem to be getting a reaction of his players, something he hinted at with his post-match comments.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the Ibrox boss said:

I’ve been seduced in as the players looked like they were looking forward to playing at Ibrox in the week.

But we didn’t have enough around the pitch to find an answer to their challenges. That’s concerning for me. We lacked leadership and I’m struggling to find any positives.

Right now you can forget titles and closing gaps, the reality is perform like that in front of 50,000 and there’s your evidence. You don’t need me to say this, that or the other.

If you have a group of lads and they give you that across the board, that’s not what’s required at Rangers. You’re miles away from it.

Gerrard has often been critical of his Rangers players after poor results this season but it seems to be increasingly difficult for that to get results on the pitch the next time we play.

Reading between the lines it seems like the first-team are simply not carrying out his gameplan or following basic instructions.

There’s only so much you can say to your players to try and motivate them and since the return from the winter break we simply haven’t been good enough for the most part.

The manager needs to find a way to get that reaction of his players sooner, or our season is going to go completely off the rails sooner rather than latter.

It’s something we should all be worried about right now.
