“The Really Disappointing Thing” – Rangers Legend Slams 28 y/o’s Inconsistent Form

|

It’s turning into a good season for Rangers under manager Steven Gerrard, as we continue to battle away at the top of the Scottish Premiership table and we remain level on points with fierce rivals Celtic, owing to today’s 3-1 victory over Hamilton Academicals.

With goals coming from Ryan Jack and a Ryan Kent brace, former striker Ally McCoist took the opportunity to barb at right back James Tavernier’s recent defensive form, as putting it simply, he feels he hasn’t been good enough and has been letting his teammates down.

You can certainly see where McCoist is coming from, Tavernier’s defensive game has always split the fans and our third goal on the day did put a different reflection on the game, given the overall performance and the way the second half played out.

Undertaking his pundit duties for BT Sport this afternoon (24/11 2.20pm), our former manager said of Tavernier’s recent showings.

“Do you know the really disappointing thing about Tavernier? We’re having this conversation every second or third week. He’s a right-back, your initial job as a right-back is to defend. I love him going forward, I think he’s brilliant going forward, I think he’s great from dead-balls. He can score goals from free-kicks. He’s a right-back. Your first job as a right-back is to defend and he’s not good enough at that at this moment in time.”

No doubt the reaction to Ally’s words will be mixed, as offensively Tav does offer plenty as he notes, but he is, unfortunately, an easy go-to when the defensive performance hasn’t been what it should be.
