New Rangers manager Steven Gerrard gets his career at Ibrox underway for real later this evening as we host FC Shkupi at our home ground for the first leg of the 2018/19 Europa League Qualifying First Round.

Having pushed the boys hard in training in recent times and added a number of new arrivals to strengthen the group after he assessed what he believed to be our weaknesses in 2017/18, it all kicks off for real at 7.45pm this evening.

Today marks the end of the honeymoon period that the former England and Liverpool midfielder has benefited from. Rangers have to hit the ground running and fans will need to see Gerrard’s words at least show signs of being a real reality on the pitch or small grumbles will begin to appear. We’ve heard plenty about fitness, so the side need to show they can go until the 90th minute. They need to show that there’s a Plan A and Plan B behind that effort. Fans need signs that the playing style is coming together and that it will be functional, exciting and effective.

Nobody expects that to come together tonight 100%. Given his short time at the club added to nine new arrivals with Umar Sadiq being the latest, it will certainly take time to bed the newbies in and get that cohesion and understanding, so most fans probably aren’t even expecting 50%.

But there has to be glimpses, the result is, however, what matters.
