Daily Record columnist Chris Sutton has again taken a massive swipe at Rangers and manager Steven Gerrard, claiming this season has been nothing but a failure for the club.

The former Celtic striker is never shy in criticising the Gers, but his latest rant is extensive and scathing, apparently unable to accept this year has been one of rebuilding at the start of a new long-term project.

Writing in The Daily Record, Sutton said:

In Glasgow it has always been pretty straightforward. It’s all about winning. Steven Gerrard has simply failed to do so this season.

Having been backed all the way by Dave King, it simply has not been good enough from his side.

As it stands, Rangers fans who think the club has been on an upward curve now need to question how low their bar is set and take a reality check.

Domestically? I’m sorry, but it’s been dreadful. Pure and simple. The talk of gaps narrowing puzzles me as the facts say differently. Celtic have been flat as a pancake and the door was wide open for Rangers to walk through. Instead of taking that walk, Gerrard and his team are still stood at the bottom of the driveway. There has been a catalogue of errors.

There’s absolutely no doubt that this season, ultimately, has been a disappointing one.

We should have pushed Celtic closer in the league, we should have been able to progress against Aberdeen in both cups.

Nobody at Rangers or within the support is going to say otherwise and Sutton’s nonconstructive ranting and raving is basically like blowing hot wind into a void.

Compared to other seasons, this is a period of relative calm at Ibrox, with everybody relevant recognising that Gerrard is going to be in charge next term and will have a summer to try and get things right on the pitch.

Gerrard, his coaching staff and his recruitment staff will be doing everything they can to bring success to the club.
