Ally McCoist paid a lovely tribute to The Queen with a warm anecdote of his playing days at Ibrox when he recalled his favourite spot to get changed, under the portrait of the monarch in the home dressing room.

More Than A Club – That was the motto emblazoned on the card display with a nod to our opponents, Barcelona, back in the Champions League in 2007.

Rangers is a way of life, as lived by the supporters, and taken in by many players throughout the decades. A club built on heritage, traditions and success. That also applies to the likes of the Loving Cup in the Trophy Room, the same as the portraits of Queen Elizabeth II in the dressing room.

One is in place above the door whilst the other forms a centre piece on the main wall as you embrace the room – it remains to be seen how the club will react to current events in regard to their placement and prominence, as well as the status of the new king.

That is what legends like McCoist did, they more than embraced the whole club and left a mark on its history. With Ally, his popularity and appeal still hold strong after all the years and he paid his own tribute in recent days.

The club’s record goalscorer stated on his Instagram account on Friday:

“Nearly every day of my playing career at Rangers, I got ready for work under this picture. They were the happiest of days and we all loved it.”

“The lady who was Queen Elizabeth II was so much to so many, myself included. Thanks for your service to us all.”

His words reflect the general feeling at the club and the esteem in which The Queen was held.
