Much as I’ve said in the preview ahead of this game the Scott Allan ‘situation’ has added extra spice to the Challenge Cup meeting with Hibernian today – Preview: Hibernian v Rangers.

Will we continuing a pursuit of the midfielder with Hibs manager Alan Stubbs again insisting that he’s not for sale?

Mark Warburton wasn’t giving too much away when talking to Sky Sports News in relation to the ongoing efforts to bring him to Ibrox, assuming they are still ongoing….

Allan has reportedly asked to leave Hibernian, something they’ve denied. Rangers have made several unsuccessful bids for him with Warburton admitting he’s ‘a talented player’ but he wouldn’t be drawn on a continued interest, saying.

‘He’s a talented player but there are many, many talented players around the country and we have been interested in a number of players, that’s a fact. That one’s been documented.’

Warburton, who in the lead up to this game also looked to clarify any thoughts that he was being disrespectful to the Hibees with what he said before this cup-tie (Warburton Relishing Hibs Opener: Click Here), concedes he’s still after players that will ‘add quality’ and ‘add value’ to the club.

Out of respect to all he wouldn’t comment further, adding.

‘My job right now is to focus on my squad of players here and he’s not my player. It’s very disrespectful to talk about another club’s player so I will not do that.

‘We are looking at one or two more players. The squad did very well the other night (losing 1-0 to Burnley) but we need to keep adding quality as and when we can.

‘As long as it adds value on and off the pitch then we will be ok. A club like Rangers must always be looking to add quality.’

Quite clearly we do want the 23-year-old, who also quite clearly will leave Easter Road next summer at the latest but an offer of £225,000 needs to be upped significantly if we want this to be the case now doesn’t it?

Somewhere between £500,000 and £1m should do this but will we pay this and would? I’m one of those that is conscious of what is spent, I don’t forget what did happen at Ibrox in the past!

Unless Allan does express that desire to leave now, Hibs may feel it’s more prudent to lose him for nothing, or next to nothing, in 12-months time than blow arguably the best chance they’ve got of pushing us – no, I’m not being arrogant! – for the title if he went now….
