Rangers cruised to a 2-0 Old Firm victory on Saturday and one former Ger reckons that the tide has turned in favour of the Light Blues in terms of who can claim to be the best side in the country.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, and reported by The Daily Record, Maurice Ross rubbished Neil Lennon’s claims that the only difference on the day was that Steven Gerrard’s team “defended their box better“.

So what has Ross said?

The Motherwell youth coach said of Rangers dominance in the first derby of the season:

“They are talking about ‘Rangers defended their box’. Rangers didn’t need to defend their box. For me, the way Celtic played it their understanding of 3-5-2 looks very basic.

“Rangers were in second gear yesterday. If you could super-impose a different coloured strip onto Celtic yesterday, it didn’t look like a Rangers v Celtic game, did it?

“I thought Rangers were in full control and I think Rangers right now are by far the best team in Scotland.”

So is Ross correct?

It’s hard to argue against anyway, Rangers have only conceded in two of their eleven league fixtures this season, winning nine and drawing two, they also restricted seven teams to either just one shot or none on target, including Celtic.

Will Rangers now go on and win the league?

Yes

Yes

No

No

During the game itself, Gerrard’s men rarely got out of second gear as their work out of possession restricted the home side to jut a couple of chances in the whole 90 minutes in one of the most one-sided Old Firm derbies that Parkhead has ever seen.

In one-off fixtures going back to last season, Rangers have shown that they are the better team, but now need to back this up with a greater consistency against the rest, this – and only this – will see them crowned champions at the end of the season.
