Last night, Steven Davis became the most capped British international men’s footballer, winning his 126th cap for Northern Ireland against Bulgaria.

Despite his best endeavours, the captain was unable to lead his side to victory in what was essentially a ‘must win’ game to sustain any NI hopes of grabbing a play-off spot for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

As it stands, Ian Baraclough’s men have one point after two qualifiers with the campaign resuming in September – it will be an almighty climb for the Ulstermen to pip Switzerland to second place in Group C, with Italy expected to be run-away leaders.

The more realistic aim is to secure third place ahead of Bulgaria and Lithuania.

It now means Baraclough is yet to win over 90 minutes, across his 11 games in charge of NI.

Respect

Following the Bulgaria game and the special achievement for Davis, it was revealed that the US national team had made a classy gesture toward the skipper.

The Americans were in Belfast last week, winning 2-1 at Windsor Park in a friendly game on Sunday.

Ahead of the record breaking game for Davis, they left a customised shirt, as below, in anticipation of what was to follow.

The sign of respect is a very nice touch and will surely be appreciated by the player, adding nicely to his collection of awards and memorabilia.
