Speculation linking former Rangers midfielder Steven Davis with a return to Ibrox from current club Southampton, either in the January transfer window or next summer, has been pretty rife on the rumour mill for the last few months.

The talk was pretty basic and hung on his previous association with us and the fact that he was not getting great game time at all under former Saints manager Mark Hughes, so 2+2 always equalled a return for the Northern Irishman.

With Southampton recently changing their gaffer, Davis put in a very solid performance against Tottenham Hotspur back on December 5, but he was again left out for their most recent match and that simply kickstarted the rumours once again.

The Belfast Telegraph have been one of a number to report that the 33-year-old has now effectively been given a green light to find himself a new club next month and should Rangers firm their interest up in him, they would be willing to let him leave on a free given his contract is up next summer.

The story is now being talked of as fact with an expectation he’ll sign as soon as the New Year ticks around.
