Former Rangers defender, Alan Hutton, has criticised the role that Connor Goldson had in Kilmarnock’s winner at Rugby Park on Wednesday night.

Speaking to Football Insider, the retired Scotland international analyses what the centre-half did wrong which ultimately cost his side at least a point.

So what has Hutton said?

Hutton felt that the £3m signing from Brighton had had a good night but a momentary lapse was enough to undo all the good work:

“The thing is, I thought Goldson actually played well – so did [Nikola] Katic – for the most part of the night.”

“The thing that probably annoyed me the most watching it was the way Goldson’s position was on the second goal, he more or less expected Katic to go and win the ball because he’d won everything else. Instead of sniffing out the danger, he presumes that he’s going to win it when he didn’t”.

“The first one’s happened, gone over his head, and he couldn’t sort his feet out to get back quick enough. The finish was unbelievable, but still, it could have been prevented.”

“These are the things that you need to iron out. You can’t be giving away sloppy goals when you want to win leagues.”

So is Hutton correct?

Goldson made one mistake the whole game and cost his side dearly, Hutton is totally correct, he is flat footed as Katic loses the first header and his body shape is all wrong as he has to turn the wrong way to run towards his own goal – standing square instead of side on anticipating the flick-on.

More importantly, Hutton is correct about giving away sloppy goals, at Tynecastle (twice), Pittodrie and now Rugby Park, Rangers have contributed to their own downfall which has cost them eight points – enough to still have the title in their own destiny.

Yes, Celtic have set high standards but Steven Gerrard’s side appear to have gifted the title to the Parkhead side following their recent slump for which he has taken responsibility and his captain can’t explain.

Will Gerrard turn things around for Rangers?

Yes

No

The Light Blues have improved enormously under Gerrard but still have creases to iron out and have a long way to go if they want to be considered serious contenders to Celtic’s crown as Scottish Premiership champions.
