Sky pundit blown away by unexpected impact of Rangers star

|

Sky Sports pundit Andy Walker believes Rangers are playing better football with Jermain Defoe leading the attack instead of Alfredo Morelos, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

Morelos of course has been serving a four-game suspension recently after being sent off against Celtic at the end of March.

With one more game to serve of that ban, some have been left wondering whether the Colombian will come straight back into the side or not considering Defoe has stepped in with great effect.

The forward has two goals and three assists in his last three matches, revitalising the Gers attack and delighting supporters with his unselfish play.

Nobody really expected Rangers to thrive so much without the 22-year-old, so the impact of Defoe has been something of a surprise.

Walker reckons it has given Steven Gerrard’s side a different dimension.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said:

As you saw at the weekend, Rangers with Jermain Defoe up in attack, I thought he led the line really well.

I thought you had players like Candeias and Arfield getting up in support of him really well and Rangers played a lot of good football.

Morelos can occupy a back four all on his own. But I think there is a different style to Rangers when Defoe plays.

It’s more on the ground. It’s more free-flowing. There’s more movement. There’s more mobility.

Are Rangers really playing better without the 29-goal hero? It’s hard to argue otherwise given our last three results.

It’s true the pressure has been off in the matches against Motherwell and Hearts but we’ve been playing some of our most exciting football of the entire season so far and you can’t discount Defoe as being the primary reason.

The only thing certain is that Gerrard has a massive decision to make when Morelos is again available for selection.
