Whilst it would be inaccurate to say that Rangers are down to the bare bones for the trip north tomorrow night, Giovanni van Bronckhorst is limited for options in midfield.

A combination of injuries, recovery time and international duty means that half a dozen senior players won’t be able to be called upon with the list including Scott Arfield, Steven Davis, Kemar Roofe, Ryan Jack, Fil Helander and Joe Aribo.

Gio acknowledged those issues in his press conference earlier today, so it remians to be seen who will get the nod in the middle of the pitch for the Scottish champions.

With a 4-2-3-1 expected, the full backline basically picks itself in the form of McGregor between the sticks with Tavernier, Goldson, Bassey and Barisic ahead of him. Glen Kamara will be a certain starter with the man beside him being the main point of contention.

The most likely options would be John Lundstram or a in at the deep end for James Sands to make his debut.

In terms of the attack, Ryan Kent will play with Ianis Hagi most likely getting the nod in is preferred central role. On the other flank will be either Fashion Sakala or Scott Wright with Alfredo Morelos leading the line up top.

It could mean only one change from the sie that defeated St Mirren on Boxing Day, with most changes to personnel reflected on the bench. Cedric Itten will be available to call on once again, following his return from Germany whilst GvB will be able to utilise five subs from nine options, for the rest of the season.

As always against Aberdeen, a physical game is to be expected and especially at Pittodrie. The Rangers supporters will provide excellent backing for their team but the one to watch is the choice in the middle of the pitch. Either Lundstram or Sands needs to stand up and be counted.

Yes, it is harsh to be expecting too much of the American on his potential debut but this game matters so much and will set the tone for the next few games to follow – something that van Bronckhorst will be acutely aware of.
