With the news that James Tavernier could be on the verge of leaving Rangers, Steven Gerrard’s pursuit of a right-back has intensified. Jon Flanagan has reportedly been identified as a target for the Gers, and despite playing for Liverpool, he may not be the most appropriate candidate for Rangers.

According to the Daily Record, Flanagan is one of Steven Gerrard’s transfer targets this summer. His off-field issues have been well publicised, and while Gerrard thinks he can help and kickstart his former teammate’s career, it may not be the best move for the Gers.

Despite being 25-years-old, the defender has only amassed 70 senior club appearances. Only once has he fully experienced the endurance that’s required and the pressures that are associated with playing on a continuous basis.

While the defender did play comparatively well on loan at Bolton last season, the lack of continuous first-team involvement could prove to be a concern for the Gers. There’s no denying that Flanagan is a competent player, he has even been capped by England. His concentration, passing and intercepting skills are notable strengths of his. That said, his crossing ability does require improvement.

While considering that Flanagan is available on a free transfer, one can see how the deal is logical from a financial perspective. Also, his potential arrival would augment the depth that Gerrard has in his squad while providing invaluable competition in the right-back spot.

If the signing is purely as Tavernier’s deputy, then it could represent shrewd business for Rangers. Although the Englishman should not be acquired as Tavernier’s replacement, his inexperience is too much of a risk to replace a player of Tavernier’s importance.
