Manager Ally McCoist has reaffirmed his faith in the current squad following the reporting of some earlier comments he made.
Speaking to the assembled press ahead of the game against Stranraer last Friday, McCoist took to the Official Site to clarify a few points after being unhappy with the way they were reported in terms of his pleasure with the current crop of players.
The manager’s comment centred around the fact that he admitted he would like to strengthen the squad ahead of next season’s increasingly likely Championship title push, and he worries that too many have taken that and the reporting of a desire for ‘vast amounts of money’ as an indication that he believes Rangers would not be competitive enough to challenge for the title should our off pitch financial problems affect his strengthening in the summer, and thus is a statement of his belief on the existing players.
‘I said if we got up to the Championship there were no guarantees we’d win it and I stand by that. There are no guarantees in anything. But not for the first time, I thought the standard of journalism was very poor. I listened to the interview again and at no time did I say we have to spend cash.’
McCoist goes on to say that rightly he’s guarded when talking about finances when it comes to the press because of how things have and will be reported when it comes to the club, but for various newspapers to report something that he didn’t say – we needed to spend vast amounts of money – is wrong and bang out of order.
‘What I said was I’d like to strengthen the squad and what happened then was I had people reacting to a statement I never made.’
McCoist insists he trusts these players enough to continue to work hard and improve and be competitive next season, but it would be remiss of him to not look to strengthen through additions just as it would be to not demand further improvement from those currently on our books.
‘What has been written suggests I don’t have faith in my current squad and that’s not the case at all. If and when we get promotion, I’d like to strengthen and give the squad a hand.’
