Setback for Rangers pursuit of attacking midfielder

Remarks by Preston gaffer Alex Neil appear to have presented a setback to Rangers in their pursuit of Preston’s attacking midfielder, Daniel Johnson.

Despite not yet signing a new contract offer that is on the table, the Jamaican international is still in favour with Neil and has continued to play in the side.

The ex-Hamilton Accies manager commented on the situation after the Lilywhites 2-0 loss to Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday.

As reported by Lancs Live, the Johnson sitution is in contrast to that of Preston’s wantaway midfielder Ben Pearson, who has confirmed that he sees his future elsewhere.

Post match, Alex Neil was quoted as saying, “Listen, Ben would’ve been fit to be in the squad today, but we’ve signed some new lads that need to get minutes now,”

“Ben has made it clear to us that his future doesn’t lie here come the end of the season.”

“At this moment in time, DJ’s (Johnson) much more likely to continue to stay here than what Ben Pearson would be. I think that’s fair to say, yeah.”

That positive mood music will provide hope to Preston fans but the fact remains that Rangers are interested in the player following a previous failed bid and he has still not committed his future to the Deepdale club.

As the end of the transfer window draws nearer, Preston will be more inclined to cash-in in the player now otherwise he will leave for nothing at the end of this season.

Rangers may decide to take matters into their own hands by placing a bid to player and club, maybe even a pre-contract agreement, that would force the Championship side to accept.
