Scott Arfield has made an announcement to confirm that he has retired from international duty with Canada.

The popular Rangers midfielder, 33, will now be available at the end of this month and into February in the same domestic period that clashes with the CONCACAF international window in which the Maple Leaf’s are scheduled to play three World Cup qualifiers.

On his Instagram account, the statement included:

“It’s with a heavy heart that the time has come to officially announce my retirement from the Canadian men’s national team.”

“I have loved every minute representing Canada. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities and experiences I have been given both on and off the pitch.”

What’s next

With this news, it will arouse intrigue if Arfield has signed new terms at Ibrox or otherwise, if a new contract has been agreed elsewhere given that he is currently in the last few months of his existing deal with Rangers.

The player still has plenty to give and will not be short of options – that may include the Super Lig in Turkey after reports came through last week of a double approach for his services.

Under Gio van Bronckhorst, the West Lothian man is on form and contributing significantly for the team – Arfield is known to be very settled with life at the Scottish champions and would be more than happy to stay.

He stated last month on his contract situation, “It’s going to take its own natural course, to be honest. I’m happy here and everybody knows I’m happy here.”
