Reports online have claimed that Rangers have offered a two year deal to Schalke’s Austrian goalkeeper Martin Fraisl.

The 28-year old has featured as first choice for the Gelsenkirchen club in Germany’s second tier this season, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. The player seems to have enjoyed a rise in prominence over the last couple of years following spells with Sandhausen before his time at Den Haag in the Eredivisie which paved the way for his current role at Schalke.

An Austrian press report has claimed that Fraisl is unlikely to stay at the club beyond this Summer, despite recent impressive performances with apparent questions over his ability to make an impression on the Bundesliga should promotion be achieved.

Meanwhile, Spox has stated that Rangers have offered a deal but face competition in the reported race to sign the goalkeeper:

“Spox and Goal information coincides with reports from Scotland that Glasgow Rangers want to lure Fraisl to the island. The Scots are looking for an alternative for goalkeeper veteran Allan McGregor (40), whose contract also expires at the end of the season.”

“The Rangers offer Fraisl a two-year contract with an option for a further year. In addition to the Europa League participants, Norwich City, a Spanish and Italian first division team, English second division teams and Olympiacos Piraeus also have the Schalke goalkeeper on their list.”

Change

As indicated above, there is likely to be some movement between the sticks at Ibrox next season.

Nothing is confirmed at present, but the expectation is that Allan McGregor will retire, leaving current understudies Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie to compete. The former has done nothing wrong and probably deserves a shot as number one whilst McCrorie still has time but at 24, he will want to play. A final loan test at a good level may be the best option for him next season.

Another keeper coming in is likely, whether in a Bosman like Fraisl or if Rangers chose to spend money on a priority signing but that prospect seems less likely. Scottish options like Dundee United’s Siegrist and Clark of St Johnstone have also been mentioned as possible targets in which Colin Stewart, the club’s goalkeeping coach is likely to have an informed say.
