Former Ranger Neil McCann singled out Alfredo Morelos for heavy criticism following his abject display at St Mirren on Saturday.

With Antonio Colak ruled out due to injury, this should have been the moment for Morelos to put down a marker, making a statement of his credentials after a frustrating spell of limited gametime from the bench. Instead, the Colombian international couldn’t have seemed more disinterested, lacking motivation and application with a very minimal effect made over the course of the game that he was very fortunate to last the duration of.

It was another sad indictment of the lacklustre nature of this Rangers team on another day of dropped points.

Between his roles as an analyst for Rangers TV and BBC Scotland, the former Ibrox winger is well placed to cast his opinion on the current situation. Speaking on BBC’s Sportscene, he was very direct on the paucity of Morelos’ impact on the game:

“You should be desperate to play Alfredo Morelos, he should be the guy up top. He ain’t doing enough! He’s a goal machine. He should automatically be the first pick but his attitude is so poor.”

“I look at the guys out there and I think they should be grabbed and told ‘do you realise that you are playing for Glasgow Rangers?’ An institution of football where winning is everything and see if you don’t, people will tell you it’s not good enough. There’s been titans of this club who have been sunk and just given criticism, so what right do guys like Morelos think they can go out and try now and again, you empty yourself.”

Justified

It is very difficult to counter the scathing criticism of Alfredo Morelos from Neil McCann given just how poor the striker is showing up at present. For a player who is out of contract at the end of the season, you would think he would be aiming to impress in the shop window, if not to earn a new contract at Ibrox but on that latter suggestion, why would the club hand out a fresh lucrative deal with so little in return.

It really is a shame but this version of Morelos is so far removed from the warrior who produced so much previously including the numbers to achieve the accolade of the club’s highest ever European goalscorer. The end of his Rangers career appears to be one that will end in disappointment unless he find can find a final turnaround from somewhere.
