The last couple of seasons, and especially since Ross Wilson arrived at Rangers, we have seen our transfer business done early to give new recruits time to settle and so that preparations for key European qualifiers aren’t hindered.

This year should be no different especially when you consider that there are no gimmes in the Champions League and that getting caught cold can cost in the region of £30-40million unless it is backed up with a lengthy Europa League run.

One man who’s decision making process became an awful lot easier is Ryan Gauld who, as reported by Vital Rangers, was planning to wait until after the European Championships before deciding on his next move, however, even with extra space in the squad and midfield injuries, Steve Clarke appears to be ignoring the qualities of a player who has been on fire in a league much tougher than the Scottish Premiership.

The Scots Abroad Podcast has reported that the pre-selection paperwork has not been sent to Gauld’s club Farense meaning that he isn’t even on a long list of potential call-ups, again, Clarke preferring to be loyal to out of form players.

And this is where Rangers come in.

He is out of contract and a player of his talent should be playing for Scotland, at 25-years old he still has plenty of time but if playing out of his skin in Portugal isn’t enough for a call-up then a move home could be more attractive if he harbours ambitions of an international call-up.

He’s available, an upgrade on what we have in the squad – Jordan Jones, Brandon Barker, Greg Stewart – and highly motivated, for me, it’s the proverbial no-brainer.
