Report: Rangers in for £1.5m defender in battle with Premier League sides and Celtic

|

According to a report in The Scottish Sun, Rangers are keeping an eye on Gillingham defender Jack Tucker, with a view to making a £1.5m move for the 20-year-old in the summer.

As always, Celtic have also been credited with an interest in the player as are Premier League outfits Aston Villa and West Ham, Tucker had been the subject of a £1m bid from Brentford in January but this was knocked back by the League 1 side.

Rangers already have four senior centre-halves on their books and it would be a surprise if Steven Gerrard spent decent money on signing a player with a similar profile to Nikola Katic and George Edmundson, unless he is going to make room for him first.

Gerrard has recently been crying out for the return of Filip Helander to the first-team with his normally reliable defence coming under fierce criticism in 2020 following a series of individual and collective errors that have led to the Light Blues dropping points and all but conceding the title to Old Firm rivals, Celtic.

Sporting director, Ross Wilson, will be responsible for overseeing a change in the club’s transfer policy whereby they will look to buy young, develop and sell on at a profit added to a core of senior professionals.

Tucker is probably one of dozens of youngsters on Wilson’s watch list as he looks to mould a squad capable of finally dethroning Celtic at the top of Scottish football and returning Rangers to their rightful place as the dominant force north of the border.
