Report – Rangers could write off nearly £4m worth of signings this summer

|

Kyle Lafferty, Borna Barisic and Eros Grezda could be finished at Rangers, according to a new report in The Herald.

The paper say that Steven Gerrard could command that the trio have played their last games for the club after a terrible showing against Liverpool U23s in a bounce game last week.

All three were hauled off at half-time against the Anfield youth team, performances that the manager later described as an embarrassment.

Barisic and Grezda joined last summer from Croatian side NK Osijek for a combined fee of £3.5m, while Lafferty made the switch from Hearts for a reported £450,000.

That means that three of Gerrard’s biggest signings last summer could be labelled as flops and moved on just a year after their arrival.

The manager made it clear that the attitude and application of the players has not been good enough.

As quoted by The Herald, the Ibrox boss said:

I already knew about them before the game,” he said “But sometimes it takes a game like that to confirm that certain people don’t fancy this challenge. They don’t want to come along with me. So it’s pretty easy to work out who you trust and who you want around you. You realise who’s going to give you a better chance of success moving forward.

On Barisic and Grezda specifically, the manager was even more scathing, telling the paper:

I’m not here to speak about individual players but I’ve already spoken about them a while ago. Have I seen anything in the interim to show me they’ve taken it on board? Well, one’s been injured but have they played in the starting 11? Not much, so that’s the answer to your question.

If it’s the case that this trio must be sold or loaned out, serious questions must be asked of Director of Football Mark Allen and Gerrard himself about the recruitment process that brought them to the club in the first place.

The manager is clearly not happy with their progress and between the three of them they represented our biggest outlay last summer.

The same mistakes can not be repeated over the coming months.

It’s all rather worrying to say the least.
