Rangers hopes of winning the Ramsden Cup for the first time were dashed after losing out on penalties against second division Queen of the South after a 2-2 draw.

After a goalless first half, Queen of the South took the lead in the 49th minute through Clark. Rangers responded fairly quickly and young McKay got the equaliser in the 55th minute. In the 72nd minute, Rangers captain Lee McCulloch gave Rangers the lead from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the box by Chris Higgins.

It looked like Rangers would hang on for the win but the Doonhammers got an injury time equaliser scored by Reilly to take it to extra-time. There was no further scoring in extra time and so it went to penalties. McCulloch scored from the spot again to give Rangers the lead, Queen of the South missed their first. But Rangers were unlucky to see Shiels effort well saved and Argyrio’s shot come off the post. QOS’ McGuffie scored the winning penalty.
