A recent report in The Mirror has claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s stay at Liverpool could be set for a premature end with the charismatic manager said to be the German FA’s favourite to replace Joachim Low in 2022, which could affect Rangers future plans.

Steven Gerrard has long been touted as Klopp’s heir apparent and his scholarship at the Ibrox club is seen as the perfect preparation for life at Anfield.

The Gers gaffer has made no secret of his desire to one day return to his boyhood club and take charge but knows that he won’t be selected for the job until he proves that he has what it takes to be a success.

In what would be a bitter sweet departure, if the Liverpool hierarchy do look to Gerrard to replace Klopp it proves that he has been a success north of the border, something that fans of the Light Blues have been starved of for way too long.

The Mirror claims that at 57-years old, Klopp will not manage at club level again after Liverpool and feels that international football is the natural step to take, with Low set to finish his tenure in 2022, it would give Gerrard another two seasons at Ibrox, he coincidentally signed a new deal taking him up to 2024 on the same day that Klopp signed his own extension.

Gerrard has undoubtedly improved Rangers in his time in charge, although he is yet to win any silverware, the Europa League runs can’t be ignored and the performance in the Betfred Cup final was worthy of the trophy only for inept officials to decide otherwise.

The domestic form after January has been a concern in both of his seasons at the helm with injuries to key players, suspension and an alarming drop in form costing his team this term.

Will Gerrard go to Liverpool after he leaves Rangers?

No

Ross Wilson, as Sporting Director, will be aware that at one stage Gerrard – and his coaching team – will be looking to move on and should already be in the process of identifying a successor similar to the way that he operated at Southampton to minimise the impact of his departure and to ensure continuity, avoiding the constant cycle of building and rebuilding that Rangers fans have seen since 2015.

He will be the fans choice to replace Klopp given the emotional attachment he has to the club but he must first of all prove that he has the ability in the dugout to match that of the one he displayed in front of 50,000 fans every other week before he can be seen as the right man for the job.
