It was great Sunday afternoon for Rangers. Celtic were beaten by Stuart McCall’s Motherwell, putting Rangers back in control in the league race. Ex Rangers Alex McLeish and Barry Ferguson lifted the English League Cup wih Birmingham, and Rangers beat St Johnstone 4-0 at Ibrox.

Rangers eased to victory with goals from Nikica Jelavic (2), Kyle Lafferty and Sasa Papac’s usual goal against St Johnstone. Walter Smith made some changes from the Europa League game with Sporting Lisbon, resting Davie Weir and pairing Nikica Jelavic with David Healy up front.

Rangers got off to a dream start with Jelavic firing in after only five minutes. The big man was first to the rebound after Thursday’s goal hero Maurice Edu had had his shot saved by Enckleman in the St Johnstone goal.

The second goal came four minutes before the break with Kyle Lafferty getting onto the scoresheet. Youngster Gregg Wylde who had replaced the injured Vladimir Weiss swung in a corner which was met with Lafferty’s head and went into the net.

It stayed at 2-0 right until ten minutes from time. Sasa Papac who always seems to score against the Saints popped up with another one, finishing superbly after a neat one-two with Jelavic. That was Papac’s FOURTH goal in SIX game against St Johnstone.

The scoring was finished off by that man Jelavic who scored in the second minute of injury time. Youngster Gregg Wylde was again the provider. Surely another youngster destined for better things in the near future.
