Rangers have turned their attentions to France as they look to secure a possible replacement for Alfredo Morelos and strengthen their front line.

Football Insider claims that John Maja of Bordeaux is on a shortlist of targets should the Ibrox club decide to cash in on the Colombian international when the transfer window eventually re-opens.

The name may be familiar to those who have seen the Sunderland Netflix documentary after firing the Teeside club into a promotion place with 15 goals in 24 appearances in League 1, he was then sold for £1.5million with six months left on his contract in January last year.

He has had a steady if unspectacular season in France but has received his first international cap for Nigeria which shows the level that the 21-year old is capable of operating at.

Who was the first signing of Rangers 9-in-a-row success in 1988/89?

Maja has all the attributes required to fit into Rangers system of playing with a solitary striker, and would certainly cope with the physicality of the Scottish Premiership having made his apprenticeship in the English lower leagues.

At Sunderland he demonstrated that he can cope with the weight of expectation of delivering for a club expected to succeed and although he wouldn’t come cheap, Rangers would certainly look at Maja as being a player who could be developed and sold on at a profit much like Odsonne Edouard across the city.

Maja is far from the finished article, much like Morelos himself when he arrived in Glasgow, but he would certainly represent a statement of intent, if his reported wage of £57,000 doesn’t prove to be a stumbling block.
