Rangers moved seven points clear of Celtic after the beat Kilmarnock 2-0 at Ibrox on Tuesday night. The light blues got two goals in two minutes after a goal-less first half.

The only change from the previous game against Dunfermline was Juan Manuel Ortiz coming in for the suspended Steven Naismith. There was a comeback from injury for Lee Wallace who came on as a second half substitute.

There was not much between the two teams in the first half. Kilmarnock’s goalkeeper Cammy Bell made a couple of good saves from a Sasa Papac shot and a Nikica Jelavic header. Rangers also came close with efforts from Ortiz and Edu but could not find the breakthrough.

It remainded goal-less until the 64th minute when Nikica Jelavic headed in from a well worked Steven Davis free-kick. It was a goal straight from the training ground as Jelavic slipped away from the Kilmarnock wall to hit home from around the penalty spot.

You wait 64 minutes for a goal then two come along at once (well almost), two minutes later Rangers were 2-0 up and it was young Gregg Wylde on the scoresheet. In an action packed couple of minutes, Kilmarnock had almost equalised straight away with a Harkins effort crashing off the crossbar.

Rangers went on the counter attack after that Kilmarnock effort and Wylde hit the back of the net from six yards after playing a one-two with Maurice Edu. There were further chances for Davis and Jelavic but Rangers couldn’t add to their lead and the game ended 2-0.

So Rangers are now seven points clear and could make that double figures on Saturday when Hibernian come to Ibrox. Albeit at that point Celtic will have two games in hand. But points in the bag are better than games in hand.
