Former Rangers midfielder, Alex Rae, has named his team of the season in The Scottish Sun and has raised a few eyebrows in the process.

He has included three Rangers players to Celtic’s four with a few surprise inclusions from other clubs too, not many fans from across Scottish football would pick a similar looking XI.

Representing the Light Blues, Rae has gone with Borna Barisic, James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos. Although their form in 2020 has been disappointing, the two full-backs are still part of the best defence in the league and their attacking output is worthy of inclusion.

Strangely, as Celtic also hold that accolade with just 19 goals conceded, he has included only Christopher Jullien from the Parkhead side’s defence and neither Old Firm keeper makes the grade, with Rangers “target” Vaclav Hladky of St Mirren getting the nod between the sticks instead.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as Rangers boss

Who was Steven Gerrard's first signing as Rangers manager?

Joe Aribo has had an impressive debut season in the Scottish Premiership but Rae preferred Motherwell’s Alan Campbell and Callum McGregor centrally, Steven Lawless of Livingston and James Forrest take up the wide roles, while the Livi man’s inclusion is sure to rile those of a green and white persuasion given Ryan Christie’s form.

Rae has gone with the obvious front two of Scotland’s best players in Alfredo Morelos and Odsonne Edouard, this season will always be a case of what might have been had the Colombian not been sent-off at Parkhead on the 29th December earning himself a three-match ban and losing his goal-scoring momentum.

It’s fair to say that if Rae was looking for a reaction he will probably get one by refusing to load his team with Celtic players despite their domestic dominance, but at least one former Ger is remaining loyal to his roots.

What a true comedian wee Alex is, the only surprise in his team (???) is the omission of his own name.
