Rangers will only have league football to look forward to between now and January after they were dumped out of the League Cup on Wednesday night by First Division Falkirk.

After the high of an old firm victory in the previous game Rangers were brought back down to earth with a shock result to a young Falkirk side. Ally McCoist had made four changes to the side that beat Celtic but it was still a strong team.

Neil Alexander got his first start of the season in place of Allan McGregor. McCulloch, Bedoya and Healy all started the game as well. McCoist wanted to give some of the fringe players a run out to see what they could offer.

The first half was goal-less with Falkirk coming closest when Wylde cleared a El Alagui off the line. Rangers made a decent start to the second half after Gregg Wylde crossed into the box for Kyle Lafferty. The big striker put the ball over the bar though.

Falkirk were the ones who took the lead though and it was in form El Alagui who grabbed the goal. The striker headed in a Kieran Duffie cross to give the first division side a shock lead. Not content with taking a shot lead, Falkirk then went on to double that lead. El Alagui headed in again after Rangers had twice hit the post.

2-0 down and Rangers were facing a shock exit, but the champions managed to pull it back to 2-2. The first goal of the comeback came from Goian who headed in from a Whittaker cross. The comeback was complete when Jelavic scored the fourth headed goal of the game. He was set up by young Gregg Wylde.

Just when it looked like it was going to extra-time, Falkirk were awarded a free-kick which was converted by Millar. Rangers could do nothing about it, they had no time and a shock result was complete.
