Rangers finally got round to playing Elgin after the ticket fiasco which led to the league game at their ground being called off. This game was at Ibrox though so no chance of a repeat of the fiasco, and this was a Scottish Cup tie.

This was the second game between the two teams this season. The last meeting was back in September in a third division match at Ibrox which Rangers won 5-1. Rangers had an early scare in that game after going 1-0 down but ran out easy winners in the end thanks to two goals from new signing David Templeton, two from McCulloch and one from Shiels.

It took Rangers until two minutes before half-time to find the opener in this game, although Kevin Kyle had the ball in the back of the net early on but despite his celebrations the goal was chopped off for offside. It was Dean Shiels who grabbed the opener, he scored in off the post from a tight angle inside the box after being set up by Kyle.

Rangers got a second in the 68th minute, and this time Kevin Kyle could celebrate for real. The big man headed in from a Barry McKay corner. Rangers were cruising into the fifth round of the Scottish Cup and they got a third goal for good measure in the 85th minute thanks to a composed finish from young substitute Kai Naismith.

The reward for victory? A fifth round tie against SPL side Dundee United at Tannadice.
