Rangers are targeting attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window, an admission made by Director of Football Mark Allen in a new interview with The Herald.

With Alfredo Morelos lighting up the Scottish game, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the Gers don’t need any strikers in the upcoming window, but the situation is a tad more precarious than that.

Morelos will likely continue to interest cash rich clubs and the back-up for the Colombian leaves a lot to be desired. Kyle Lafferty has yet to hit his stride since returning to the club and Umar Sadiq clearly isn’t good enough.

That may be why Allen is continuing to track forwards heading into the new year.

As quoted by The Herald, he said:

I think we have been quite good in our recruitment in terms of making sure we have got adequate cover in most positions.

You are always looking for someone that can put the ball in the back of the net, that happens at every football club every day. The fact we are always looking at strikers won’t be a surprise to anybody or any director of football or manager.

I just think it depends on the type of player that becomes available at that moment in time. You look at it and ask one simple question: ‘Can this player improve where we are right now?’ And if the answer to that is yes and the opportunity is there to do it then you do it.

Reports this weekend have linked the club with a renewed move for Dominic Solanke, which would likely excite the majority of supporters, even if it leads to questions about his suitability to Steven Gerrard’s preferred formations.

The ideal scenario is probably attracting another young striker to the club on a permanent basis, as an insurance policy for the eventual departure of Morelos.

Having that succession plan would stand us in good stead for the next couple of years at least.
