Ross Wilson is a busy man.

With several of Rangers top players into the last two years of their respective contracts, much of his work would have revolved around getting them tied up to extensions – and then Steven Gerrard decided to throw a massive spanner into the works.

It’s an intriguing situation because many of the players involved; Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo and Connor Goldson, were no doubt persuaded to head to Scottish football because of who the manager was, whether or not talks will be affected by having someone else in charge remains to be seen.

Goldson is, of course, the most pressing concern given that he will be free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with other clubs from January, a stick that has been used to beat him with whenever he has so much as missed a pass.

There is a touch of confirmation bias about this, because fans are watching, almost waiting, for him to make a mistake so that they can say “I told you so” it will inevitably happen – think the corner that was given away against Motherwell when he needlessly headed the ball out of play.

Despite losing as many goals already as we did in the whole of last season, our defence, as a unit, has actually been pretty solid, it’s just that we have been conceding from the one or two shots that we have allowed the opposition to take though a mixture of individual errors and – perhaps – a drop off in Allan McGregor’s usual high standards – forgivable considering he is approaching his 40th birthday and how high his previous standards were.

The contract situation won’t change, regardless of who the new manager is, the director of football carries most of the burden for the quality and depth of the squad and will need to get back to work as soon as the new manager has their feet under the table, there’s also the small matter of a transfer window about to open – it’s safe to say that there will be no winter break for Mr Wilson.
