Rangers’ interest in Croatian striker Nikica Jelavic is over. The Rapid Vienna striker will not be moving to Rangers and instead will stay with the Austrian club.

Rapid Vienna have said that they don’t have time to bring in a replacement and need him to face Aston Villa in the Europa League play-off game. It spells the end of weeks of speculation over a proposed move.

Rangers will now look to complete the signing of Portsmouth striker Tommy Smith. Gaffer Walter Smith will also be trying to bring some more in before the transfer window slams shut in just over a fortnight.

A look at Rangers’ bench on Saturday shows you how badly Rangers need to bring in some cover. Andrius Velicka was the only player on the bench who was not a youth player. An injury or two and Rangers are in dire straits.

Walter Smith may be tempted to come back in for Jelavic next year and may attempt to sign him on a bosman in the January transfer window. But for now Smith will focus his attentions on signing is namesake from Portsmouth.
