Steven Gerrard has refuted reported Rangers interest in Swansea City winger Nathan Dyer, with a late move for the player looking very unlikely this week.

The Scottish Sun reported at the weekend that the Gers were looking at the player as a potential replacement for Jamie Murphy after he was ruled out for the season with an ACL injury.

However, speaking to The Scotsman after Sunday’s match at Motherwell, the Gers boss said of reported interest in Ryan Gauld and Dyer: “Nothing. I’ve been asked about Nathan Dyer and there’s nothing in that either. Hopefully we can get a centre-back in. I’m not sure if it’s loan or permanent – could be either.”

Rated at £2.25m by Transfermarkt, Dyer would have been an exciting addition to the squad at Ibrox, even at 30 years old.

With 175 appearances in the English Premier League and 171 more in the English Championship, he has the experience required to make an impact in Scottish football.

As last minute replacements for injured players go, we could have likely done a lot worse.

However, Gerrard has made it clear that defensive signings are the priority over the next few days, with more depth and competition needed for Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic, despite their impressive start at Ibrox.
