Let the games commence.

The pace at which journalists are trying to be the first to break the news on who the next manager of Rangers could be is frightening. The 24-hour nature of social media means that by the time tomorrow’s newspapers are printed they will already be out of date is the perfect example of modern sports media.

We have, by now, all seen the names connected with replacing Giovanni van Bronckhorst and one, due to his previous connection with Ross Wilson and his ability to get the best out of players is Sean Dyche.

Former BBC football journalist Fraser Fletcher has revealed that the former Burnley boss isn’t just a consideration but that the Ranger board has already been spoken to, via his Twitter account.

I totally understand why we would consider Dyche and why many would see him as a popular option but – and I might be doing him an injustice here – I just can’t see how he would be able to progress us in Europe from the highs of last season and qualifying for the Champions League this year.

Dyche is the hardest of all the managers to assess in that he was always up against it at Burnley in terms of budget in the Premier League but, when he was relegated to the Championship, he got promotion at the first time of asking which would take an entirely different style of play.

If Wilson has done his job properly, we should already have a replacement lined up – could we really be about to see a return to 4-4-2?
