It’s easy to be distracted as a Rangers fan just now, there is only, really, one story in town, with the impending announcement of a new manager eagerly awaited.

Another recent Premier League appointment has seen a nouveau riche club linked with a former Gers flop with a sizeable price tag slapped on his head too.

Umar Sadiq will only ever be remembered for one thing in a Light Blue shirt – why did he dive when he had an empty goal? – and he barely saw enough game time to get his kit dirty whilst he was at Ibrox, now though, he’s scoring goals on a regular basis in Spain’s second tier and, according to Fichajes, via Teamtalk, Newcastle United are eyeing up a €25million bid – over £20m:

“A report from Fichajes names Almeria striker Umar Sadiq as a target for Newcastle in 2022.

“Sadiq is in his second season with Almeria, for whom he scored 22 times from 43 games last term. He has picked up from where he left off with seven goals from 15 appearances so far in 2021-22.

“Sadiq could become a top-flight footballer sooner, though – and in a different country. It is believed he is now on Newcastle’s radar for a winter transfer.

“Almeria would not necessarily complain if they can make a major profit by selling him. They acquired him for €5m but are now hopeful of gaining a fee worth five times that, matching their record €25m windfall for selling Darwin Nunez to Benfica in 2020.”

After leaving Rangers he went back to Roma before joining Partizan Belgrade where his form attracted the attention of Almeira and since then, a host of clubs have been linked with his signature and for silly amounts of money – even Manchester United.

He was a very raw player when he was with us but, even then, the doubts that Steven Gerrard had about his aptitude raised serious questions about his work ethic in training and just how much he wanted to be a success in Glasgow.

Credit where credit is due though, if we hadn’t seen him in the flesh, his numbers wold have us getting excited if we were linked with him now, but €25m? In a week where Aston Villa reckon they could get Glen Kamara for £5m, the world really has gone mad.
