When looking at potential Scottish players who could be signed to improve the balance of our squad flagged up after our centre-half nightmare this week, the pickings are slim to say the least.

Looking at the national side, most of the good players are in the English Premier League and would cost us a fortune, the rest – players like Scott McKenna, Stephen O’Donnell and Lyndon Dykes simply aren’t good enough so, who is there that could maybe do us a job?

Vital Rangers has covered in the past how much of a no-brainer signing John Souttar of Hearts is, he seems to be over his injury problems now and was unlucky not to get recalled by Steve Clarke, a centre-half with his physical attributes who is also comfortable on the ball is what most managers dream of.

Another who could be brought in is long-term target Siriki Dembele, currently playing with Peterborough United in the Championship and also out of contract at the end of this season, we have, according to their director of football, Barry Fry, been interested in the Scotland eligible forward for some time.

Rangers went toe-to-toe with Inter Milan to sign Ronaldo when he left Barcelona.

Further down the shopping list, but an option nonetheless, is Graeme Shinnie, another previous target and someone who is well versed in the ways of the Scottish Premiership, on a free, he’d be a reliable back-up but I’d rather see us put our faith in the academy.

On a one in, one out, principle, Souttar could easily replace Jack Simpson in the squad and Dembele replace Brandon Barker and instantly our ratio of home grown players improves, it’s minor tweaks like this that Ross Wilson will now be looking at, a luxury that can be afforded due to the hard work he has done since arriving from Southampton.
