After the sales of Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey in the summer with Nathan Patterson already in the Premier League, Rangers would be looking at Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Glen Kamara as next in line to, potentially, bring in a decent transfer fee, however, we all know it hasn’t worked out like that.

Kent and Morelos could well be set to leave for nothing and Kamara’s bit-part role suggests that he will not be as valuable as his previous form and talent demanded. A rumoured £20million release clause for Kent, a similar valuation and a rejected bid of £16.25m for Morelos and an estimated valuation of £10m for Kamara mean that we could be losing an awful lot of potential income if Ross Wilson doesn’t get his finger out.

Writing on Twitter in response to criticism of the much-vaunted player trading model that Rangers are now employing, David Edgar of the Heart and Hand podcast was particularly scathing of the current state of affairs:

“The model has stopped. The whole point of it is to have a conveyor belt of the next generation who can go on and be sold after a couple years service. We don’t.”

Ridvan Yilmaz, Rabbi Matondo and, to a lesser extent because of the nature of their deals, Malik Tillman and James Sands, have been brought in with a view to developing them and selling further down the line, however, none of them have been totally convincing, even if we have seen flashes from them of what they might be capable of.

With a solid core of players at their peak, I’d expect some of the older ones – Allan McGregor, Steven Davis, Scott Arfield, Filip Helander and Ryan Jack – to potentially be released and replaced with younger, more dynamic players who are better suited to the model.

January isn’t usually the best window for making improvements to the squad, however, it is no longer an option for Ross Wilson, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s is hanging by a thread.
