Cast your minds back to October when Steven Gerrard was still our manager and Connor Goldson’s form wasn’t at the usually high standard that we had become accustomed too.

The Gers vice-captain spoke to BT Sport via Football Scotland about his contract situation in an interview that was both intriguing and revealing:

“I’ve said this a lot of times before. But at the same time I want to see the club go to the next level.

“As I’ve said before, I want the club to win 56, 57 and 58.

“I don’t want to be remembered just for 55.

“It is a place I want to stay but it needs to be right for me and my family.”

The arrival of Giovanni van Bronckhorst will have impressed Goldson with the immediate impact he has had on our results and tactics in such a short period of time, however, I’m not sure that the signings of James Sands and John Souttar are the sort that would persuade him that we are heading for the next level.

Signing a player like Andreas Skov Olsen would send a message, not only to Goldson and other members of the squad that we aren’t resting on our laurels but to our nearest rivals in the league – adding quality from a position of strength would signal a statement of intent about what our aspirations are.

Sands is a great prospect and Souttar’s qualities are well known but, if we want to qualify for and then compete in the Champions League, Ross Wilson will need to get the cheque book out.
