There is no doubt that if Rangers are to have any chance of getting back into the title race they have to bring in new faces in January. In recent weeks, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has turned to his bench and had to rely on veterans that shouldn’t even still be at the club and untested academy kids.

What he needs is quality but also players who can be developed and sold on at a profit further down the line and in summer target, Nicolas Raskin, there is the perfect player.

Capable of playing alongside someone like John Lundstram or on his own in a defensive midfield role, the Belgian Under-21 international is exactly what we have been looking for in the engine room all season and, according to Voetbal Nieuws, via The Scotsman, we could well be back in for the 21-year old:

“Rangers are reportedly interested in Nicolas Raskin. The Standard Liege midfielder is in the final year of his deal and was previously linked with a switch to Ibrox.

“According to Voetbal Nieuws, the 21-year-old Belgian U-21 international is wanted by Club Brugge and Italian side Spezia.”

Raskin, as well as Darius Olaru, were heavily tipped for moves after we beat PSV Eindhoven to qualify for the Champions League, however, it later emerged that any arrivals were linked with Glen Kamara’s potential departure.

Raskin is similar to Ridvan Yilmaz in that he will be able to add immediate quality as well as bring the average age of the starting XI down and, with his contract expiring at the end of this season, we should be able to pick him up for a decent fee if we try to get him in early.

It has seemed obvious to Rangers fans that the midfield is an area that has needed attention for ages, and yet, we are still relying on injury prone and over-the-hill players who can’t play 90 minutes – another transfer window passing without any additions is a dereliction of duty.
