Rangers will be looking for new players in the summer, there is no doubt about that, and one position that will be near the top of the list is goalkeeper. Ironically, Allan McGregor was one of a few players to emerge from the league cup final with any credit after a string of good saves.

Of the players mentioned, Jack Butland seems like the most sensible option in that he has the most top level experience, including nine England caps , but is also available on a free transfer. At 29-years old, he also has plenty of time ahead of him to be a long-term replacement for the recently inducted hall of famer too.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, transfer journalist Dean Jones reckons that Butland would consider leaving England with the opportunity to play regular football on the table:

“Rangers are on the lookout for players they can get a spark from. We’re seeing that new motivation, at the moment, with Cantwell and Raskin.

“I can see why they’d be looking at this as an option that is similar. You never know, it might tempt him.”

There are a lot of positions that need to be addressed but, alongside a number nine, getting the right goalkeeper in is essential if we are to have any success. Every good Rangers team has been built from the back and we have seen a long line of top quality stoppers come through the doors at Ibrox, Butland, if he is the man to fill McGregor’s shoes, will have the responsibility of replacing a club legend – not a job for the feint hearted.
