Despite dropping points to St Mirren in the last game before the World Cup break which means that Rangers are now nine points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, the club is yet to make any statement or announcement either way on the future of Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

What they have done though, is allow the manager to give an interview with Sky Sports discussing his first year in charge which is as big an indication as any that he will still be the boss when domestic football kicks off again in December.

The Dutchman has not been short of critics this season. A disastrous Champions League campaign after an encouraging few results in qualifying only added to the pressure of a heavy defeat to Celtic, however, it would appear that injuries to key players have bought him time.

The squad is in an obvious state of transition and there is no way that our board will throw the nearly £40million that Celtic’s did when they needed an overhaul and, when asked if there would be any new faces in January Gio said:

“I speak almost every day with Ross (Wilson) and we need to see how my squad is when the window comes closer.

“In every window you have to make sure you end the window stronger than you started.

“You can see what is possible and what we can do. We always want a better squad.”

The negativity has been building since the last week of the transfer window after we beat PSV Eindhoven only to see no further additions to the squad, a source of particular frustration for fans who could all see where we needed reinforcements.

Players like Steven Davis and Scott Arfield should have been used sparingly, instead, we are seeing them almost every week. This isn’t purely on the manager’s shoulders though.

Keeping Gio in charge is one thing but, if there aren’t quality signings made in January – not loans – the club could have a full-scale revolt on their hands.
