Rangers fans are in agreement that we need another striker, that we ended the season with Joe Aribo playing the role and have since sold Cedric Itten makes that plainly obvious but, attracting a quality player with Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe in situ might prove difficult.

One option, with the World Cup being halfway through the season, is looking for a player who needs to be playing at a decent level to either maintain their international status or get back into the country’s squad and one such player currently with the Netherlands is Wout Weghorst.

The 29-year old Burnley striker is looking for a temporary move and, as reported by the Burnley Express, there is already interest in the towering  Dutchman:

“We have clearly agreed in advance that I will not play in the Championship.

“The club would like to keep me and will do everything they can to return to the Premier League as soon as possible.

“For next season it is important that I can perform at a high level, also with a view to the World Cup in Qatar.

“You shouldn’t believe everything the media says. There is interest from Germany, England, and Turkey.”

Wehorst didn’t have a great time of it in the Premier League as his side got relegated on the final day of the season with just two goals and three assists to his name in 20 appearances, however, at both Wolfsburg and Alkmaar, a goal scoring rate of one every two games plus multiple assists proves that he is a top player – 160 goals and 46 assists in 396 senior games.

His £58,000 per week salary would be an issue but if we managed to negotiate a loan deal then a percentage of his pay would be affordable and we would finally have a genuine alternative to Morelos for leading the line, we also wouldn’t have to adjust our tactics to fit him in.

With clubs like Brugge, Fenerbahce and PSV Eindhoven said to be interested, we could certainly compete for his signature, guaranteed Europa League football with a very realistic chance of Champions League football would also be an attractive proposition.

Signing Weghorst would allow us to get more goalscorers on the park too because there is no reason why Morelos, Roofe and Fashion Sakala couldn’t play alongside the 12-cap international, it’s a difficult position to fill but Burnley’s situation has seen a talented player become available and it’s one we should take advantage of.
