Rangers have been linked with numerous midfielders during this transfer window and, as yet, haven’t really brought anyone in that you would class as a typical defensive midfielder or number eight – Tom Lawrence being the closest but does his best work in the final third.

One name to emerge recently has been that of Belgian youth international Nicolas Raskin who was said to be valued around the €5.5million mark by Standard Liege despite being in the last year of his contract.

It would appear that the Belgian’s don’t want to budge on the fee though and, after breaking the initial story, The 4th Official has revealed that our interest has ended, but that it isn’t all bad news:

“I have been told today morning that Rangers are pulling out of the chase for Raskin. It is thought that the financial outlay on him does not make sense as talks so far have not been that fruitful.

“Belgian outlet Lesoir Sports published the news yesterday that Rangers had pulled out for Raskin but they didn’t give any explanation as to why. Now we know at least the reason behind Rangers not going forward with this currently.

“Rangers, however, are looking into a couple of other players in the position (no I do not know the names). The club intends to do a deal for a midfielder if everything goes right.”

In the early days of the window we were linked, mainly, with defensive midfielders who could also drop back into defence but, in recent weeks, we’ve seen Darius Olaru, Evander and now Ross Barkley too, a clear shift to number eights and more attack-minded players.

A lot can be achieved in a few days and Ross Wilson will be working overtime to get any last-minute deals over the line and, after charging fans top whack for Champions League tickets, there better be something in the pipeline, even if Raskin isn’t the one.
