Rangers failure to add another midfielder – of any description – after beating PSV Eindhoven to qualify for th Champions League group sages has definitely come back to bite Ross Wilson on the backside and hamper Giovanni van Bronckhrost’s chances of competing on various fronts in the process.

With 27 games played already, it’s easy to see why there have been multiple injuries and why the squad has been stretched so thinly. That extra quality would have helped in more ways than one.

The January target won’t be far away when we return to domestic action after the World Cup and a player that we were linked with in the summer has re-emerged as a potential target, with Nicolas Raskin’s representatives giving an update on our reported interest, via The Daily Express:

“There was interest in the summer from Rangers. We knew about that but nothing happened. As far as we are aware it ended last summer and there has not been any interest at this point.

“We have not been told of anything coming from Rangers in January.

“Of course, it is well known that Nicolas is out of contract next summer and there are many clubs who are alert to that fact. We have not begun any talks with Standard on a new contract.”

Midfield is an absolute priority in January, we have already seen the ramifications of not strengthening in the summer and, on a pre-contract agreement or cut-price deal, Raskin would be a great bit of business.

Not only would he be a quality addition and immediately strengthen the first XI but he also has the potential to be even better and land us a bigger transfer fee in the future.

If Wilson made a mistake in the summer by not adding strength to our midfield, he has the opportunity to make things right pretty quickly, hopefully, he’s not lost Raskin’s agent’s number.
