Rangers may have had a quiet start to the transfer window but, with pre-season training underway, it would be a surprise if there aren’t any new additions over the coming week to give Giovanni van Bronckhorst the best possible chance in this season’s Champions League qualifiers.

A new striker appears to be near the top of the list with Stephen Odey said to be a possible target, the Nigerian international valued in the region of £2-3million by Danish side Randers.

With 14 goals and two assists in 33 games last season, it’s easy to see why we are keeping tabs on the 24-year old, who is technically still on loan from Genk, although an already agreed permanent deal is a formality due to the profit that the Danes are likely to make immediately by selling him on in this summer.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, former Sky Sports reporter, Peter O’Rourke, reckons that it would be a great move for Rangers, especially if we see off Celtic in the process:

“It will always go down well with the fans, I think, if Rangers were able to beat Celtic to a potential transfer target.

“They’ve obviously done their homework on this player and it seems that both Rangers and Celtic are interested in him.

“I think if Rangers were to win the race, it would give them a lift ahead of the new season.”

There’s no doubt that we shop in similar markets but on this occasion I doubt if they are interested given the number of forwards that they already have at the club but O’Rourke is correct in that it would give us a massive lift heading into the new season if we had additional firepower to call on in attack – near mind beating Celtic to a signing.

It’s an area of the park that we need to strengthen as soon as possible and for all that Odey will probably be on a shortlist, it looks as though Antonio Colak is the number one target, the Croatian international who Rangers have reportedly already made an offer for, either way, a new striker will be coming in , and coming in soon, patience is a virtue and all that.
