Just like buses, after having to wait weeks for a new signing, it looks like the second is swiftly about to follow with the news that Tom Lawrence is set to join Rangers.

Vital Rangers has backed this transfer from as far back as January when he became available to discuss a pre-contract agreement and could have made a cut-price move from Derby County given the financial uncertainty at the now League 1 side.

News that an announcement is imminent has been broken by Chris Jack of the Glasgow Times and Rangers fans finally have something to cheer about:

“Rangers have won the race to sign former Derby County star Tom Lawrence as Giovanni van Bronckhorst gets set to secure his second signing of the summer.

“The Light Blues landed their top target on Thursday evening as Antonio Colak put pen-to-paper on a £1.8million move from Greek side PAOK.

“Now Lawrence is poised to join him at Ibrox after Rangers fought off competition from Sheffield United to land the Welsh international.”

Lawrence has a far from perfect history in that he has fallen foul of the law both on and off the pitch, however, being appointed as captain last season for Derby suggests that he has matured, not that his drink driving conviction in 2019 could ever be condoned or excused.

Lawrence is similar to Joe Aribo in that he can play anywhere in or behind a front three and as an attacking midfielder, he’s never really had the chance to play in a dominant team like Rangers so it will be intriguing to see what he can do with more of the ball, with more opportunities to score and a better quality of team-mates around him.

With the World Cup coming up in November, Lawrence, with 23 caps to his name, will be dying to get himself into the Wales squad, he’s at a good age in that he will appreciate the opportunity that he has in front of him – let’s hope he takes it with both hands.
