Okumu in and Goldson gone, it all adds up for Rangers

Occam’s razor is a theory which, broadly speaking, explains how the simplest solution or explanation is usually the correct one.

Connor Goldson hasn’t signed a new contract yet despite us winning the league in March and he has just a year left on his current deal.

Rangers will need to sell “one or two” players to balance the books and because it simply isn’t sustainable, or good business, to let valuable players leave for free.

Then, we take into consideration that our interest in “monster” centre-half Joseph Okumu seems to have accelerated and there is – almost – only one conclusion that can be drawn – Goldson is leaving this summer.

Vital Rangers has looked into what Okumu would bring to Rangers already when he was first mentioned in connection with a story that claimed Aston Villa and Leicester City were chasing Filip Helander, however, it became pretty clear that his talents lie not purely in out-and-out defending but in building attacks and passing out from the back – sound familiar?

Who finished as Rangers top goal scorer this season?

Okumu is almost a hybrid between our two first-choice picks at the heart of defence and if we can get him for £2.5million and sell Goldson for anything around double what we paid for him then we have done about as well as can be expected.

There is a huge difference between wanting and having to sell a player, Goldson may have aspirations of playing in the Champions League for us, but if he doesn’t sign at least a one-year extension then we have to cash in, in six months time he will be free to negotiate a transfer back down south in which we wouldn’t receive a penny for one of our most important players.
