Rangers need additional help in midfield, preferably a player who is capable of scoring goals and creating chances for others – a younger Scott Arfield, if you like.

Ross Wilson will have his net cast far and wide but a quick look over the border throws up an individual who could well add attacking impetus to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, he is also available on a pre-contract agreement with the potential for a reduced fee transfer in January a tempting proposition.

Reading’s John Swift currently has eight goals and nine assists in 25 Championship appearances, the former England Under-21 cap consistency producing decent numbers since leaving Chelsea’s academy in 2016, a goal or an assist every three games from midfield/attacking midfield is not to be sniffed at, especially for a team that hasn’t been in the top flight or dominating their league for some time.

The 26-year old has, understandably, been attracting interest from the Premier League and it is only a surprise that he hasn’t made the step up sooner, he is exactly the type of player that we would have been looking at when Steven Gerrard was in charge.

Not only does Swift produce at the sharp end of the pitch in terms of goals and assists but he is also one of the best passers in the league in terms of passes into the final third, key passes and through passes, ideal when you are looking to open up packed defences.

Currently valued at £5.4million, he is a player that ticks an awful lot of boxes and someone that would add extra creativity, we already have Kamara, Ryan Jack, James Sands, John Lundstram and Steven Davis that can sit and control the tempo of a game but, if Juninho Bacuna isn’t going to be trusted to do what we saw he is capable of against Stirling Albion, we should move swiftly – sorry – and try to persuade someone who is going to have plenty of offers at the end of the season that he should migrate north.
